Dr. Janis K. Pappalardo

Dr. Janis K. Pappalardo is the Associate Director of Research, Markets, and Regulations at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).



Dr. Janis K. Pappalardo is the Associate Director of Research, Markets, and Regulations at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), where she leads a talented staff of over 150 people who produce, synthesize, and communicate social science research, market intelligence, and regulatory analysis to develop and implement evidence-based consumer protection policies to promote fair, transparent, competitive, and innovative financial markets that work as well as possible for everyone, including the most vulnerable consumers.

She joined the CFPB in December 2020, with 34 years of experience at the Federal Trade Commission, where she worked as an economist, commissioner advisor, and Assistant Director for Consumer Protection in the Bureau of Economics. As Assistant Director, Jan led the team responsible for providing economic analysis of all FTC consumer protection cases, regulations, and economic reports, including in the areas of advertising, financial products, privacy, and data security. In 2020, she received a commendation for distinguished service from the FTC.

Dr. Pappalardo holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University with a major field in consumer economics and secondary fields in statistics and industrial organization.
